On January 18, 2017, SPRING/Senegal facilitated a one-day workshop on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Kaolack Region. Attendees included representatives of some of the partner organizations that SPRING works with in cereal value chains and vegetable and tree crop production. Several participants attended the workshop with their spouses. The workshop focused on how reducing women’s workload can positively impact family nutrition.
On January 18, 2017, SPRING/Senegal facilitated a one-day workshop on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the region of Kaolack. The workshop was organized as part of SPRING’s strategy to improve the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women and children under the age of two. Women in Senegal often play several key roles in the household: they are responsible for cultivating vegetables and other crops, preparing food at home, keeping the household tidy, and caring for their children.

To commemorate World Breastfeeding Week 2016, SPRING staff in Kyrgyz Republic and community leaders in the town of Kara Kul, held a community gathering that connected local health workers and families to raise awareness around the multiple benefits of optimal breastfeeding practices, including exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continued breastfeeding to 2 years and beyond.
Experts from across several sectors are meeting this week in Bangkok at the Asia regional Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategy Global Learning & Evidence Exchange (MSN-GLEE) hosted by SPRING in partnership with USAID. This diverse group of USAID Mission staff, implementing partners, and academics will discuss multi-sectoral approaches to address malnutrition and plan for global action. The attendees represent programs in social and behavior change communications (SBCC), humanitarian response, agriculture, women’s empowerment, health, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).

SPRING released findings from the multi-sectoral Pathways to Better Nutrition (PBN) Case Study during a national event in Kathmandu, Nepal on April 20th, 2016. The National Planning Commission (NPC) chaired the event. There were over 60 participants representing multiple government ministries, donors, UN groups, civil society, academia, and the private sector.
In tandem with the Kyrgyz Association of Village Health Committees, SPRING works through an existing network of “Community Activists,” the primary infrastructure in many communities for awareness raising and the dissemination of social messages. SPRING orients the Activists on a different nutrition-related theme (e.g.
SPRING has conducted several studies to better understand household nutrition practices, accessibility of food throughout the year, and existing practices around food storage and preservation for the winter.
