Guinean Radio Stations Trained to Promote Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture

In April 2017, SPRING/Guinea and Farm Radio International (FRI) led trainings in Mamou and Faranah for four local community radio stations on how to develop effective interactive radio programming to support the uptake of nutrition-sensitive agriculture practices being promoted under the Feed the Future Strengthening Market-Led Agricultural Research, Technology, and Education (SMARTE) activity, led by Winrock International.

Training Community Video and Radio Staff in Guinea on MIYCN and Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture

In Guinea, SPRING is promoting nutrition-sensitive agriculture and maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) practices through radio programs and community videos. SPRING recently held a two-day training on these topics with staff from local radio and video production centers. During the training, participants explored how to break the cycle of malnutrition, methods for making local agricultural practices more nutrition-sensitive, and their roles as agents of change in their communities.

SPRING/Senegal Cereal Transformation Unit Training

From May 4-8, 2017, SPRING/Senegal trained all six partner networks in Senegal on the technical and business elements of operating and maintaining machinery to process cereals like maize and millet. SPRING/Senegal purchased 12 multi-function cereal processors and distributed two to each agricultural partner network. The 3-in-1 machines shell, grind, and crush cereals, tasks traditionally done by women using a mortar and pestle.

SPRING/Guinea Develops Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture Training Package for Local "Agro-Preneurs"

In April 2017, SPRING/Guinea tested and refined a nutrition-sensitive agriculture training package that will be integrated into a broader agro-preneur program curriculum for use by the Feed the Future-funded Strengthening Market-Led Agricultural Research, Technology, and Education (SMARTE) activity in Guinea. Through its Apprentisage en Vulgarisation, Entrepreneuriat et l’Innovation Rurale (AVENIR) program, SMARTE is training local agro-preneurs to work with private-sector value chain actors throughout Guinea.

In April 2017, SPRING tested and modified a nutrition-sensitive agriculture training curriculum in Kindia, Guinea, with staff from Feed the Future’s Strengthening Market-Led Agricultural Research, Technology and Education (SMARTE) for the Apprentisage en Vulgarisation, Entrepreneuriat et l’Innovation Rurale (AVENIR) program. This nutrition-sensitive agriculture training module will be integrated into a four-week training curriculum that Winrock International is developing for SMARTE’s AVENIR program, which trains local “agro-preneurs” how to use agricultural technologies.
