From May 4-8, 2017, SPRING/Senegal trained all six partner networks in Senegal on the technical and business elements of operating and maintaining machinery to process cereals like maize and millet. SPRING/Senegal purchased 12 multi-function cereal processors and distributed two to each agricultural partner network. The 3-in-1 machines shell, grind, and crush cereals, tasks traditionally done by women using a mortar and pestle.

On April 25, 2017, SPRING/Senegal recognized World Malaria Day with local partner l’Association pour la promotion de la femme sénégalese [Association for the promotion of Senegalese Women] (APROFES) and Plan International, an implementing partner of the Government of Senegal’s Cellule pour la lutte contre la malnutrition [Unit for the Fight against Malnutrition] (CLM).

Women's economic empowerment directly improves the family’s nutritional status. Village savings and loan associations (VSLAs) are community-managed groups aimed at empowering community members economically by providing them with a designated safe place to save their money and routine access to small loans and emergency insurance.
SPRING/Bangladesh, working in Bangladesh since 2012, has been using a multichannel integrated approach to tackling malnutrition along the nation’s coastal belt using both nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions.

On January 18, 2017, SPRING/Senegal facilitated a one-day workshop on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Kaolack Region. Attendees included representatives of some of the partner organizations that SPRING works with in cereal value chains and vegetable and tree crop production. Several participants attended the workshop with their spouses. The workshop focused on how reducing women’s workload can positively impact family nutrition.
