Collaborating across Borders: SPRING/Sierra Leone Staff Visit SPRING/Guinea for Learning Exchange

In May 2017, SPRING organized a trip for staff from the Feed the Future-funded Entrepreneurial Agriculture for Improved Nutrition (EAIN) activity and SPRING/Sierra Leone to visit the SPRING/Guinea project in Faranah, Guinea to learn about the community media approaches used to promote improved maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) and nutrition-sensitive agriculture practices, especially in households with pregnant women and young children.

Photo-to-Illustration Process – Examples from SPRING’s Workshop in Guinea

In July 2017, SPRING/Guinea held a six-day training on a graphic design technique known as the Photo-to-Illustration (PTI) process with illustrators and IT managers in Guinea and Sierra Leone, as well as Peace Corps Guinea staff and volunteers. The PTI process involves taking a reference photograph, tracing a line drawing, and using graphic design software to add color, shading, and patterns for a realistic image that is used in social and behavior change communication visuals for nutrition, health, and agriculture.

SPRING and Digital Green Video Production Trainings for Community Video in Guinea

In 2016 and 2017, SPRING/Guinea worked with partners in Guinea to develop resources. Introducing New SPRING - UNICEF Resources to Develop/Adapt High Quality Images for Nutrition

High-quality visual images are an essential component of nutrition and health social and behavior change (SBC) programming but can be difficult to find or produce. In 2010, UNICEF and partners developed an integrated nutrition SBC package known as the Community Infant and Young Child Feeding (C-IYCF) Counselling Package – investing in high-quality graphic illustrations for low-literacy contexts.

SPRING Hosts Joint Working Group Meeting on Service Integration for Nutrition, Family Planning, and Immunization

These images capture some of the key moments from the day-long joint MIYCN-FP-Immunization meeting on June 14, 2017. The 46 attendees (plus 13 remote participants) listened to eight technical presentations facilitated by their colleagues and engaged in large-group plenary discussions as well as small-group breakout sessions. The goal of the meeting was to share experiences, findings, and lessons learned in order to identify ways to increase synergy and use existing platforms to integrate and strengthen provision of nutrition, FP, and immunization services.

Reducing Missed Opportunities in Service Integration for Nutrition, Family Planning, and Immunization

Immunization, family planning (FP), and maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) are all important aspects of primary care for women and children. There are many missed opportunities for integration which could further improve these services. To address this issue, on June 14, 2017, the MIYCN-FP Integration Working Group hosted a joint meeting with the FP-Immunization Integration Working Group to discuss ways to increase synergy and use existing platforms to integrate and strengthen global service provision.

Training Community Video and Radio Staff in Guinea on MIYCN and Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture

In Guinea, SPRING is promoting nutrition-sensitive agriculture and maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) practices through radio programs and community videos. SPRING recently held a two-day training on these topics with staff from local radio and video production centers. During the training, participants explored how to break the cycle of malnutrition, methods for making local agricultural practices more nutrition-sensitive, and their roles as agents of change in their communities.

Supporting Fathers and Empowering Families in Ghana

In 2017, SPRING/Ghana started piloting Father-to-Father Support Groups in four communities in the Northern and Upper East Regions of Ghana. These groups are comprised of 15-17 men who meet twice per month to discuss family-oriented issues that include infant and young child feeding, household interaction and support, and male involvement in child welfare. These discussions are geared to improve men’s support to women within the household.
