SPRING/Kyrgyz Republic and the Health Promotion Unit of Tash Kumyr town held an event on the importance of breastfeeding.
The “Breastfeeding is a Source of Child Health” event took place in Tash Kumyr on Thursday September 22, 2016 with about 110 people in attendance. The function began with remarks from the Health Sector Specialist from the Mayor’s office, the Director of the Family Medicine Center, SPRING’s SBCC & Media Specialist, and a local Family Medicine Center doctor on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and complementary feeding from six to 24 months. Several performances and competitions took place following the speeches.
The “Healthy Nutrition - Healthy Youth” event brought together 102 competitors from the surrounding colleges of Jalal Abad, who participated in a 5 km distance run, rope pulling, and other competitions. In addition to the competitions testing strength and endurance, the head of the Social Department of Jalal Abad Mayor’s Office, the head of the Health Promotion Unit of Jalal Abad City, the chairman of the Youth Committee, and SPRING’s SBCC specialist spoke on the importance of exercise, dietary diversity, and healthy nutrition.

SPRING/Kyrgyz Republic has designed a leaflet on positive nutrition. This double-sided leaflet provides information in Kyrgyz on the food pyramid and portion size, explained using tea cups, an extensively-used basis for comparison in rural and remote areas of Kyrgyz Republic. The backside of the leaflet lists 10 healthy nutrition recommendations developed by the World Health Organization.
