SPRING has developed a booklet for mothers about the 1,000 Day Window of Opportunity, from pregnancy up to the child’s second birthday, the period when life-long physical and cognitive stunting can be prevented with appropriate nutrition. In 2011, vitamin A deficiency was recognized as a significant problem that affects about seven in ten children under the age of five in Ghana and contributes to one in three deaths of children 6-59 months. Consumption of vitamin A-rich foods is encouraged as it is important for improved health outcomes for households—especially for pregnant and lactating mothers and children under two.

SPRING/Ghana Trains Regional- and District-level Trainers on the District Assessment Tool for Anemia (DATA)

SPRING/Ghana conducted a training of trainers (ToT) workshop for district-level trainers from seven districts—East Gonja, Tolon, Central Gonja, Tatale, Mion, Bawku West, and Kumbungu— in Ghana’s Northern Region to implement the District Assessment Tool for Anemia (DATA). The DATA is a tool to assess the anemia situation and strengthen programming at the district level.

USAID Deputy Mission Director Visits SPRING Program in Kok-Jangak Rayon of Kyrgyz Republic

Nathan Park, Deputy Mission Director of USAID/Kyrgyz Republic, visited SPRING/Kyrgyz Republic on February 8, 2017 in Kok-Jangak rayon, Jalalabad oblast. Mr. Park was visiting USAID programs in the southern region, including a visit to SPRING activity sites in the area. Mr. Park observed a training of community volunteers and joined a household visit to promote appropriate complementary feeding with a family of a young child.

USAID Visit Highlights SPRING/Ghana’s 1,000-day Household Program in Northern Ghana

From November 1 – 2, 2016, SPRING/Ghana hosted visitors from USAID/Ghana and USAID/DC for a visit to Karaga District in the Northern Region and Bawku West District in the Upper East Region. Rebecca Fertziger, deputy director of the USAID/Ghana Health, Population and Nutrition Office, led the visit. Guests received a first-hand look at SPRING’s multi-sectoral collaborations, including with health, education, environment, agriculture, community development, and other sector organizations.
